Ideas - Treatment Plan

We have started to annotate the lyrics of our chosen song in order to put our ideas together and know what type of shots we will have throughout the whole video. The track we chose is 'And the snakes start to sing' by Bring Me The Horizon.

Editing On Premiere Pro

We used premier pro to edit our preliminary task. We learned how to cut, change the pace of the           video, add effects and sync the song with the video.

Camera Induction

In today's we had a camera induction in order to know how to adjust the settings to get the best shots.

Preliminary Task Plan - Bring me back to life

For our preliminary task we chose to film the first minute of Bring me back to life as it relates to the genre we chose for our main video. We went through the lyrics and produced a shot list for each line.

Case study 3 - BMTH - Throne

I have chosen another BMTH music video as my 3rd case study due to it being very inspirational and creative. It inspires me for my own music video as I will be making a video to one of their songs. There are many effects in their videos I would love to use in my own music video as my main task.

The video starts off quite fast as it is cutting from one shot to another. Some of the beginning shots of the videos are and outline of one thing and have another thing in the middle, eg. the outline of the man with the sunset in it. The video is both performance based and narrative as you can see the main singer and the band performing the songs, but also other symbols relating and telling the story of the lyrics. The video is very unusual and obscure as it has actors with weapons in their hands bowing down next to a coffin with their faces covered, this is the same as people would get beheaded back in the olden days.

Most of the cutting rate of the video is very fast, however, there are a few slow motion parts which allow the audience to take a breath and be able to continue keeping up with the video and still understand both the lyrics and the video. There is a slight use of motion sickness used in the video (previously seen in other videos by BMTH) which combines the filming of two videos on two different cameras. This creates a cool effect as if the image was blurred and stretched out.

The video is quite sinister as it has shots of a person laying in bed next to a skeleton and a child underneath the bed crouched. This is disturbing but very creative and cool as it gives a raw image of struggles you have to go through in life in order to archive something. This relates to the lyrics of the song 'feed me to the wolves, tomorrow i will come back leader of the whole pack', it shows that you have to conquer the obstacles in order to succeed. This is shown through the end of the video where all of the oppressed people during the video, rebel and win in the end.

This is one of my favorite music videos because its so unique and different, yet so simple and straight to the point. The song is very powerful.
I am going to adapt the following elements in my video: performance based video, slow motion parts and motion sickness techniques, I am also thinking about adding the element of animal symbolism.

Case Study 2 - Pvris - You and I

I have also chosen this song as one of my case studies because it is a alternative type of Rock which would relate with my chosen genre.

The video starts with a TV sort of buzzing sound which lets the audience know that the video is going to start and catches their attention. It the moves onto the main singer filmed in water as if she was drowning, this attracts the audience to listen closely to the lyrics in order to get an understanding of the video itself. The video gets very personal when you see a close of up the main singer performing the song and then seeing a shot of her crouched on the floor naked. This shot makes the audience feel connected to the singer as it is a way of her expressing herself without holding back.

As the video goes on you start seeing glitching on the screen when the beat of the song gets slightly faster, this effect has been edited on to show the disruption in her feelings as she sings about her and her lover. The chorus of the song shows a shot of the main singer as if the camera was glitching around her face to show her emotions. There are fast cutting rates when she is singing 'ooh oooh ooh' while its switching from the water scene, to her performing and to her covered in paint. When she is covered in red paint, she looks very devil like which can represent that love can be a bad thing and she is laying on the floor moving very fast which adds to this.

The bokeh effect used in black and white allow the audience time to have a personal moment to relate with the song and have their own thoughts about the lyrics without the input of the images in the video. There are faded parts in the video which can link with the lyrics 'if we can keep our love alive', and may show that their love is already fading and may be harder to keep it alive.

The video ends very slowly shot in the water scene just as the beginning of the video, which can show that their love has died and she has drowned in her emotions. The beginning of the music video could of showed what can happen and the end showed what actually happened.
The use of black and white and motion sickness effects are very typical to rock videos. The video being performance based is also very rock like as it allows the audience connect to the song and the perform as the singer shares the emotion to them. This is on element I want to use in my own music video, along side the water shots.

Case study 1 - BMTH - Avalanche

I have chosen this as on of my case studies because it relates to the genre I chose for my main music video which is Rock. The video starts off slow and the camera slowly moves closely towards the stage where the rest of the video is performed. It starts off as a dark room and gradually lightens up as you can see the lights surrounding the stage which are focused on the band. The song quickly becomes upbeat and with the energy of the song rising, the cutting rates also become a lot faster compared to the beginning of the video. The pace of the video is very appropriate for the song as the instrumental is very fast due to being a rock song. This attracts the audience to watch the video very closely as it is moving fast and they may not want to miss something out.

The video is produced by combining many videos filmed at different concerts where the band has performed. As you can tell the video is performance based as you can see the band performing their song on stage and many close ups of the main singer of the band. This makes the video very personal to the band as they have the chance to be in the video performing their song and selling it.

Despite the video mostly being fast paced, there are some slow motion parts such as when the drummer is playing the drums which is captured from a birds eye view and some of the high shots of the crowd are also edited in slow motion to give the audience time to see what is going on in the crowd. Most of the times when the chorus is sang, the video has a shaky effect as if there really was an avalanche and the ground was shaking, this can also relate to the loudness of the concert room because you can see vibrations in the room from the base of the speakers.

There are many flashing lights through out the video which can result in the audience struggling to concentrate on the video for too long. The video ends in a slow way just the same way as it started which makes it look very put together and professional.
The role of performance allows the singer transmit the emotions he feels and wants to give off to the audience. It is very typical for a rock video as most of them are performance based. I would like to incorporate the element of the dark room with lights only shining on the band on the stage and also the slow motion parts.

Thinking About Case Studies

In class we started thinking about our case studies and noted down important points as a class which will help us when analyzing the music videos chosen but also will help us with our own music videos in the future.
